Making Money from Domain Names - Part 1

Did you know that Domain Names are exchanging hands for millions of pounds, hard to believe is n’t it.  Let’s take a closer look at this internet phenomena.

In the previous article, we looked at how to set up your own domain name using the company 123-Reg.  Now I’m going to explain, why I think it’s important to have your own Domain Name and the reason for this article.  On Saturday last week, I came across a really catchy article as I was browsing the forums pages of my own web-hosting service provider WebHostingUk which I wanted to share with my readers.

The article was entitled ‘Sarah Palin’s Multi-Million Dollar Domain Name’ and is about how someone on ebay is trying to sell the domain name esarahpalin.com for a bargain bid starting price of $10 million, YES, ten million dollars.  OK we know, nothing is worth that amount of money, especially if you don’t even know who Sarah Palin is (she is the only second-ever female US vice-presidential candidate).

I will give you the link to the original article at the end, but the point of this all is, that Domain Names are beginning to exchange hands for big money.  Obviously someone is trying to cash in on the future popularity of Sarah Palin, and unless they have legitimate reasons for the website, they may lose any law-suits of trying to use someone else’s name for their own financial gain.  I remember a long time ago watching a TV show on how someone had registered sex.com and made a tidy some of money on it eventually.  One of the commentators to the article, advises that more common domain names like mortgages.com, digitalcameras.com, cellphones.com, and many other commerce related terms are easily worth seven figures…. now, that’s serious money.

Domain Names are becoming real assets, much like property, so if you own something everyone wants, you know its going to be worth a lot of money.  And, just like property they are exchanging hands for a lot of money.  So, when you think how cheaply you can register a Domain Name, owning it is definitely worth considering, especially if you can think of something new or something coming up on the horizon that everyone will want.  Just to give you an idea, just one UK Domain Name seller I visited is selling the following Domain Names at these prices, have you got the cash?

A cool $1.1Million dollars and you could be the proud owner of cruises.co.uk.  Interestingly, I did a search for cruises on 123-Reg, and all the domain names are gone, apart from some obscure countries which I’ve never even heard of!!!  Phones.co.uk sounds a decent one to have, and even mobile.co.uk.  Can you imagine, what the same Domain Names with a dot com extension would be worth!!!

I wonder how much technicalarticles.co.uk is worth, hmmm.  It only cost me £6.56 to buy, I’d settle for a few thousand if anyone’s interested!!!    I’d be interested in your comments or views on all of this, especially if you’ve got a great name I should buy next!  We could all become Domain Name investors.

Again, I guess there is a lot of luck in all of this, being at the right place at the right time, but I think spending sometime on your own blog niche ideas will help you develop something which no-one else has thought of, and then its just a matter of time.  Good Luck, get your thinking caps on and register your Domain Names.

And here is the article for you to read:  Multimillion Dollar Domain Name

Enjoy!

  8. @easydollar: Thanks!

@ElwinW45: I guess it’s what people are willing to pay thats important, but be realistic, its always the big numbers that people notice.

  9. According to the Better Business Bureau, Jeff Paul Systems has earned an unsatisfactory record based on more than a half dozen categories. Because all their recent correspondence with the company came back marked “Return to Sender”, they are now referring cases to the Attorney General Consumer Protection Division.
